Organ Concert Series We are delighted to announce the second concert in our Organ Fundraising Concert Series. Guest artistSHAWN POTTER, organist at First Baptist Church, will present a concert here at McPhail. His special guest soloist will be his wife, Jennifer. Shawn’s program will include works by Bach, Buxtehude, Böhm, Pärt, and Jean de Macque. Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door. All proceeds will go to the organ fund.
Shawn Potter holds a master’s degree in organ performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he studied organ with Hans-Ola Ericsson and John Grew, and harpsichord and continuo with Hank Knox. In 2013, Shawn won the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ National Organ Competition (Godfrey Hewitt Prize). Past engagements have included concerts at the RCCO National Convention (Winnipeg and Kingston), the Tyska Kyrkan (Stockholm, Sweden), Organix (Toronto), Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria), and the Montreal Bach Festival. In 2013-2014, he performed a series of eight concerts comprising the complete organ works of Dieterich Buxtehude. Shawn works regularly with choral groups in Ottawa, including the Capital Chamber Choir and Aella Choir. Originally from Nova Scotia, Shawn graduated in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in music from Mount Allison University. He has held numerous grants and fellowships including a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grant, allowing him to pursue a wide variety of interests, ranging from 17th century North German repertoire to the organ works of Olivier Messiaen. Shawn has held organ scholar positions in Montreal at both Christ Church Cathedral and the church of St. John the Evangelist, and is currently the Director of Music at First Baptist Church, Ottawa.
JENNIFER BERNTSON has a BMus in Voice from Mount Allison University and MA from Carleton University, where she researched collective music-making as an expression of protest. Since moving to Ottawa, Jennifer enjoys sharing her passion for music through teaching, conducting, and performing, and has established a thriving voice and piano studio. She currently can be heard performing regularly with the Capital Chamber Choir, with Trio Pensato, and at at First Baptist Church as soprano soloist and conductor of the Children’s Choir. In June 2016 she founded Aella Choir, a women's ensemble which performs without a conductor.
